چکیده

Soil complexity and environmental heterogeneity may be viewed as a consequence of deterministic chaotic dynamics and therefore highly irregular patterns with so-called multifractal behavior should be common. This approach introduces a distinct viewpoint as compared with fractal models for soil surface roughness based on fractional Brownian motion. It suggests that it would be useful to move away from the fractal geometry of sets towards themultifractal description of singular probabilitymeasures, as well as going beyond second order statistics. The goal of this study was to investigate the multifractal behavior of soil microtopography measured on transects. On rectangular 200 cm 40 cm plots, point elevation values were obtained and soil microtopographywas examined as two-dimensional probability measure. A well-defined multifractal behavior similar to multinomial measures was observed in all cases. Themultinomial measures were simulated with amultifractal spectrum close to the spectra of the experimental plots to obtain the synthetic multifractals to evaluate the level of uncertainty in the estimates of the multifractal spectrum of natural roughness as a consequence of the transect rather than grid sampling. We found that the transect separation used to collect the experimental data in this work generates a realistic multifractal spectrum but it cannot precisely define its tails that correspond to asymptotic values of the singularity exponents. 2009 Elsevier B.V. Application of multifractal modeling for separation of sulfidic mineralized zones based on induced polarization and resistivity data in the Ghare-Tappeh Cu deposit, NW Iran

The aim of this study was to identify various sulfidic mineralized zones in the Ghare-Tappeh Cu deposit (NW Iran) based on geo-electrical data including induced polarization (IP) and resistivity (RS) using the concentration-volume (C-V) and number-size (N-S) fractal models. The fractal models were used to separate high and moderate sulfidic zones from low sulfidic zones and barren wall rocks. B...

The effect of estimation methods on multifractal modeling for mineralized zone delineation in the Dardevey iron ore deposit, NE Iran

The purpose of this study is to identify the effect of Ordinary Kriging (OK) and Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW) estimation methods for the delineation of mineralized zones based on subsurface data using concentration–volume (C–V) multifractal modeling in the Dardevey iron ore deposit, NE Iran. Variograms and anisotropic ellipsoid were generated for the Fe distribution by the above estimation m...

Modeling environmental factors on vegetation destruction in protected areas

Over the past two decades, degradation damage has increased in natural ecosystems. This research focuses solely on the degradation of soil and vegetation cover in Sorkheh Eshpar National Park. For this purpose, some physical properties of the soil (specific gravity and true porosity, moisture content, a percentage of pebbles, acidity and conductivity and soil texture) were measured. Also, the d...

Multifractal analysis of vertical profiles of soil penetration resistance at the field scale

Soil penetration resistance (PR) is widely used as an indirect indicator of soil strength. Soil PR is linked to basic soil properties and correlated to root growth and plant production, and as such it is extensively used as a practical tool for assessing soil compaction and to evaluate the effects of soil management. This study investigates how results from multifractal analysis can quantify ke...

Multifractal analysis of canopy height measures in a longleaf pine savanna

Spatial patterns of forest canopies are fractal as they exhibit variation over a continuum of scales. A measure of fractal dimension of a forested landscape represents the spatial summation of physiologic (leaf-level), demographic (populationlevel), and abiotic (e.g., edaphic) processes, as well as exogenous disturbances (e.g., ®re and hurricane) and thus provides a basis to classify or monitor...
